Kim Major-George

Our first workshop for 2016 is with Kim Major-George
 Kim shared her work with us before demonstrating
 We were shown the materials to use such as organza and our favourite, scrim
 Soluble fabric/Romeo encasing puree packaging that has been scored/patterned

 We were keen to start after Kim's introduction and out came the Romeo

 Immersing the soluble fabric into a bath of cold water

 Kim used masking tape before printing the background paper which had been previously dampened this morning

Karen Johnson "Celestial convergence"

Today we welcomed in the new year with Karen Johnson. This was Karen's first appearance to an Embroiderers' Guild group. Karen has always worked in education after her initial training in a bridal ware establishment
 She has spent the last 4 years as a freelance textile artist and has enjoyed practising her love of photography to capture images. Karen loves to zoom in and then bring out the textural qualities with fabric and thread
 One of Karen's early pieces - Paisley - inspired by looking at Indian textiles, whilst working to make 35 pieces for an Indian restaurant taking 6-8 months

 Karen followed a course with Jean Draper and learned the 'Language of Stitch.' The Constance Howard book of Stitches is Karen's bible
Karen has used cross stitch of varying lengths, cretan stitch and French knots

Karen's photography for textiles began after capturing a partial eclipse using filters across the lens of the camera
 Karen loves to work on black cotton velvet for the celestial pieces of work with heavy duty vylene on the back

 The white shimmering areas is silk with beads. The photograph with Karen, shows the large scale of this piece of work. Exploding super nova is the first piece Karen sold. It has explosive energy
 Karen's technique involves collage embellished with embroidery and beads
 Karen thought that this piece is reminiscent of the 1960's style. Soluble fabric was stitched onto the background material and Karen experimented with low relief metallic work

 The Sun proved to be very intense colour-wise. A fiery palette

The Moon is Karen's favourite and proved to be very popular in the room today
