Saturday May 21st Photography and stitch - Maggie Finney

Maggie gave us a very interesting talk about her love of photography and stitch.

Her photography is taken both as a art form in its own right but also to be interpreted into stitch mainly on felt. She makes her own felt and then incorporates stitching and beads.

Often she will leave the photo as it is taken but she also uses computer programmes to put on filters.

She takes landscapes but also  macro images of wildlife.

Here are some images of her work that she has developed from photographs.

Thank you for an insight into your work Maggie

Great workshop

Maria’s workshop helped to re-interest me in machine embroidery. She was so helpful and gave so much information on how to make it easier to manage, thank you. My piece doesn’t do the day justice, but I love being table to write with the machine - as Maria said, writing is drawing!

7th May  - Drawing with the sewing machine- Maria Wigley

Several of our members spent an enjoyable day learning how to draw with our sewing machines.

Maria started by showing some of her work and then some sample pieces that she had done .

She then showed us a drawing that her daughter had done that she added stitch to.

This was followed by a short period where we did some quick sketches which we the traced onto tissue paper. The tissue was then pinned onto calico that had been stretched into a frame . Maria adds borders of scrap fabric to her chosen fabric to enlarge the area that she can use in her hoop. She then demonstrated the outlining and then after removing the tissue she then showed the different methods of adding detail with close zig zig. couching, using thick thread in the bobbin, adding text and applique.

Finally we all had a go and here are the results - work in progress

Thank you Maria for an enjoyable day
