Jennifer Collier - My Story and a workshop on Paper Slippers

Jennifer's story was a fascinating one. She has a wonderful workshop at Unit 12 in Staffordshire and gave us a most enlightening talk on her journey with stitch and paper, which you can also see on Instagram. her work is commissioned from all over the world and her attention to detail is wonderful. The workshop was enjoyed by all who took part, making paper slippers from interesting book pages and other papers.

Rachel Singleton - Creative Obsessions

September 3rd - Stumpwork Insects - Anne Griffiths

This day was all about different techniques for making beetles  and butterflies. The butterflies were painted onto plain cotton or silk organza and after they had dried they were stitched onto the background with the addition of 'false eyelash ' antenna and the bodies were covered card or pelmet vylene.

The beetles wings were made using ' false nails' painted with nail varnish and then stitched over an embellished and raised  felt structure.

Here are our insects.

Thank you Anne for a lovely day.

2nd September - Stories and Stitch - Anne Griffiths

Anne started her lecture by telling us about her City and Guilds work and looking at Letters and Angels. Her interest in stitching started at an early age  She made this before she was 10.

These were some mini kimonos that showed a variety of techniques.

A lot of the work that she showed us was relating to a project she undertook with the stories of Alice in Wonderland . These are some of the panels that she did on silk organza for this project.

Anne concluded her talk by showing us how she produces illuminated letter with ' tomato puree tube or hand painting with machine stitch
Thank you Anne

Saturday 16th July - Brilliant Goldwork Workshop with Hanny Newton

A brilliant workshop with Hanny, on contemporary goldwork. Hanny showed us several techniques and suggestions as to how to get started with goldwork.

She explained the different goldwork threads that are available and with a little experimentation we discovered which ones worked best for ourselves.

Couching is quite often the main technique used, but by splitting the threads and adding more together, you can get very different effects.

Also using purl and pearl purl threads many different effects can be obtained by cutting different lengths, called chips, and applying them in different ways. Some samples are below.
